pH is a measurement of hydrogen ions’ activity in water. When the pH is high, water is acidic. When the pH is low, water is basic.

pH > 7 : contains bicarbonate and carbonate group ions

pH < 7 : contains acid ions that cause damage to pool equipment and health

*Note: low pH water will react with chlorine when used, creating carcinogenic trihalomethane.

For swimming pools, the standard pH is 7.2 – 7.8

The pH is very important because it displays the properties of the water to help assess the ability of the pipes and containers to corrode metals. The pH of water, if not checked and balanced carefully, health effects such as skin, hair, eyes, or more dangerous (if regularly drunk or swallowed) can cause digestive and intestinal problems.
